osx :: spotlight not indexing

So, my Macbook air has been upsetting me lately. I use spotlight a lot, as I have lots of ‘stuff’ in ‘lots of places’ and I can never find it. So I use spotlight, as most mac users would. I found that when I used it, it never returned anything. After trying fix after fix, I found something that worked. Its quick and easy.

This is how you do it. First you need to open a terminal window.

First we see if the spotlight folder exists

type in sudo rm -rf /.Spotlight-V100

Then we delete it

sudo rm -rf /.Spotlight-V200

Then we turn off indexing

sudo mdutil -i off /

Then we turn it on

sudo mdutil -i on /

finally we tell spotlight to start indexing

sudo mdutil -E /

That should fire up some mdutil tasks in your activity monitor, and spotlight should be now working!
